“SERIOUSLY?” JEREMY says, clearly frustrated.

“It’s just six guys. Come on, it will take someone like you two seconds to get all the dirt on them through cyberspace. I’ll do the people watching and you do the data watching.”

He groans into the phone. But I know it’s only a show to make me feel bad for asking all this last minute.

“Fine.”

“Thank you, Jeremy,” I squeal.

“How’s everything else going?” he asks a little too nonchalantly. I hear what he’s asking but not asking.

“It’s good. Trying to get all this wrapped up so I can get home. There was something I was going to ask you,” my fingers drum against the fabric of the couch. “But for the life of me I can’t remember.”

“No surprise there. I swear you have the memory of a...what animal has zero memory?”

“Dolphins.”

“How in the hell do you remember random facts like that but not stuff that matters?”

“You got me. It’s strange, I know.”

“Anyway, what about this Officer Wilcox? Sounds like you two are spending a lot of time together.”

The jealous undertone makes my eyes roll to the ceiling. “Yeah, well he is part of my op and if I want the promotion I have to do what I have to do, right? I’ll make sure he comes around.”

Silence on the other end says everything. “Right, well do what you need to do, I guess. I just don’t want to see your reputation go to shit, you know.”

Flipping to my back I lay on the cushions, my feet dangling over the armrest. “And how would that happen?”

He clears his throat once. Twice. “That you’re willing to take it to the physical step to get this op done.”

“And what physical step would that be, Jeremy? I hit, I kick, isn’t that physical? Does me kicking someone’s ass mean I’m ‘taking it down to the physical side?’”

“Don’t be a bitch. You know what I mean.”

“I hope I don’t”

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Maybe I’m tired of things being a one way street with the bias between men and women agents.”

“Wow, didn’t realize this was going to turn into a full-fledged gender thing. All I’m saying is watch how you bring him over. If you take it too far, it won’t look good, Lu. I’m saying this as a friend. You might accomplish your mission but that stigma sticks around.”

His biased way of thinking makes Gabe’s response the other night even more special. He understood what I was saying, why can’t Jeremy?

“So the traces and stuff?”

“I’ll have it to you later today. And Lu.”

I let awkward silence settle, not responding. Acknowledging him is too much at this point.

“You know I’m only looking out for you. I don’t want to see your career hurt, the one you’ve given so much to. I know it’s not fair, but it is what it is. You’re not going to change that.”

It is what it is. Invisible weight settles on my chest, making every breath a struggle. “Talk to you later.” Not waiting to hear another word, I toss the phone on the table and bring my hand up to cover my face.
